Hilda Marie Martin
May 11, 1922 - August 10, 2023
Hilda Marie Carter-Martin was born in Kennett Square, PA on May 11, 1922. Affectionally known as Grandmom, Hildie, Nanas, Gran or Granny, or Bannas, or Sis. Just to name a few ; married Linwood “Sheek” “Sam” Martin who preceded her in death. They raised their family in Kennett Square, PA. It wasn’t until she was afforded the opportunity to participate in the Self-Help Housing program and built her home in West Grove PA where she resided until her passing.
Hilda attended and graduated from Kennett High School in 1941. She was an active member of the Carter-Miller-Johnson VFW Post #8984 until it disbanded. Hilda was a hard worker and had several jobs throughout her life. As a young child she would take jobs doing ironing for various families. Hilda worked at New Bolton Center doing various housekeeping services. While working there she would also do private duty as a housekeeper, ironing clothing and house sitting. Hilda retired and continued to clean offices at Land Hope.
She established a special bond with the Hick’s family and became good friends with the Matriarch of their family (Mrs. Ann Hicks). The family adopted Hilda as one of their family members and made sure that she was included in their family events as well as picking her up and taking her to lunch, making sure that she knew that they loved and cared about her. This extended from generation to generation. The Hicks family thought it not robbery to celebrate her 99th birthday by having the local fire company come down her street and blow their horn while the family, because of COVID, celebrated on the lawn.
Hilda loved the Lord and was faithful in her tithing. She first attended church at Bethel AME in Kennett Square. She saw many Pastors come and go. While there she served on the Choir and Steward Board. Later in life she left Bethel AME and joined South Coatesville Life Center Church under the leadership of Rev. William Johnson where until her passing she was an active member. Hilda also attended Bible Study Group which bought her joy and close friendships.
Family meant everything to Hilda, she knew the history of the family and didn’t mind sharing her knowledge with anyone. She remembered everything and was proud to discuss the trials and tribulations that she had endured coming up in the Jim Crow Era. Making sure to let you know that “God” was the head of her life and how her faith in Him kept her going. Special thanks and mention to Nidia Flores and the Avilia family who always checked in on her and made sure Ms. Hilda was alright.
Hilda leave a host of family to cherished memories: her one sister – Eunice Carter; four loving children, Linwood Martin Jr., (Diane); Elaine McClain; Frank O.
